Be a part of our community

You are welcome!

As a choral community, we’re always excited to welcome new members! We hold membership drives at the start of every season. This roughly equates to the beginning and the middle of a year. Please fill in your details if a voice assessment sign-up sheet is active on this page. If not, reach out to us, and we’ll notify you of our next membership drive.

The JQC is a fun community to be a part of. We love singing but also enjoy spending time together. We organise social events, an annual choir camp, and singing workshops. If these social aspects are too much for you, no worries! Everyone is welcome to participate in their way and at their own pace.

Want to join the JQC?

(of course you do, who are you kidding?)

Drop us an email to hello@jqc.org.za and let us know you’re keen and we’ll get in touch with you to schedule your audition!

Any questions?

  • We rehearse towards various public performances during a season. Members are expected to attend weekly rehearsals every Tuesday evening in Parkview, Johannesburg. To ensure we keep our community strong and vibrant, we request that you do not miss more than 15% of all rehearsals in a season. Rehearsals currently run from 18:30 to 20:45, with a break in the middle. The JQC is a warm and supportive space. We perform a diversity of songs, organise social activities and love to celebrate our unique talents and identities.

  • We use the term queer as a way of encapsulating the spectrum of sexual and gender identities. The term is empowering and represents an affirmation of our individual and group identities.

  • YES! The JQC welcomes all members, including those who do not identify as queer but are friends to our community. You do not need to be able to read music, and you do not need to sing professionally either (although it’s great if you do!). You do need to be able to sing in perfect tune, but before you say: Ah! I cannot do this!, rather let our musical director give you some one-on-one advice through our voice placement process. Perhaps you’ll surprise yourself!

  • Our musical repertoire is diverse, and is intended to reflect the beauty and vitality of South Africa and its people. Our music spans the sacred and the secular, and is sung in a variety of languages. Our musical repertoire sometimes contains a deeper message, or not, and is chosen by and arranged for our community by our musical director.

  • As a Not-For Profit Organization, the Johannesburg Queer Chorus is reliant on donations and member fees to keep the chorus operational. Our membership costs are:

    Standard (Monthly): R240 per month

    Standard (Annual): R2160 per year

    Student (Monthly): R170 per month*

    Student (Annual): R1530 per year*

    Senior (Monthly): R170 per month**

    Senior (Annual): R1530 per year**

*Proof of student status required | **Proof of age over 65 required

Financial difficulties should not be a barrier to singing with the JQC, and partial or full concessions are available to members in need based on the ability of the JQC to subsidise these fees. Please contact your section representative or a person on the Member Committee should you require a concession.

  • We use a member management website called Hello Club to facilitate all financial, calendar, and communications-based interactions with members. Access to Hello Club will be given to you on confirmation of your membership.

  • Unfortunately we are not accepting new members under the age of 18.

  • If you sign up to join the JQC, we’ll schedule a 5-minute voice assessment with you. This is really for us to determine in what section your voice best fits. It’s a low-pressure environment with just you and our music director going over notes and a song if you’ve prepared one.

Some seasons we may actively be seeking to balance out our sections, as we may have too many people in one or two. You may be asked to try again for the next season if we cannot accept you due to these requirements.

We’ll get back to you within a week of your voice assessment.
