A home for Jo’burg’s queer singers

Embodying the rhythm of life!

We sing proudly, welcome warmly, celebrate joyfully, and practise constantly. We are a choir where all members are free to be who they are, socialise with whomever they choose and embrace their identities in community and song. As trepidatious newcomers blossom, relationships spark, friendships kindle, and insecurities fade, the JQC transforms and empowers queer lives.

Our musical journey

The JQC is Joburg’s young, innovative, and unique community choir. From our humble beginnings in 2020, we have grown quickly and sustainably to include over 50 members from the LGBTQIA+ community and their friends and family. Our choir nurtures an important space for LGBTQIA+ people in Johannesburg: a safe, inclusive, and enveloping environment, providing a regular opportunity to gather and share in a collective musical journey.

Embracing challenges

We persevered during the challenging times of the pandemic and have since navigated many successful concert seasons featuring a diverse musical repertoire that spans classical to musical theatre to pop. The cheers and standing ovations at our concerts embody the warmth, support, and high praise we receive from our enthusiastic and loyal audiences.

We’ve made a family, now it’s time to make an impact.

The JQC is a not-for-profit organisation. We rely on fundraising, performance takings, and member dues for our day-to-day operations. We strive to make an impact both locally and internationally.

Inspired by our very successful crowd and performance-funded success, we are actively seeking financial support from individuals and institutions looking to make difference in the lives of talented queer people in South Africa.

Your support will not only help us to represent South Africa abroad but will assist in growing and nurturing our community.

  • Your support contributes to our day-to-day activities, covering diverse and essential costs such as the purchase of music, the rental of accessible rehearsal and concert venues, and the remuneration of our music director and our accompanist.

  • Your contribution supports the South African music community! We commission original and arranged choral works by South African LGBTQIA+ musicians and composers.

  • Your contribution assists our members through our outreach scholarships, available to those in need of subsidized dues and in need of financial support for local and international choir tours.

  • Your support fosters a safe and welcoming space in Johannesburg for LGBTQIA+ people and their communities.

A bass line we’re proud of

The JQC is governed by a 7-member Member Committee. This Committee exercises its power in terms of the JCQ’s Constitution, and it is democratically elected annually at a general meeting of all members of the chorus.

Our 50 members come from diverse backgrounds in terms of gender, sexual orientation, age, and race. We are actively seeking ways to continually expand the JQC’s diversity even further. We have a generally equitable distribution between the four main voice parts of a standard choir: soprano, alto, tenor, and bass.
